Birds of prey will be the topic at the Smith Mountain Lake State Park's winter lecture series on Feb. 1.

The discussion will be led by Robb Herbst, a raptor expert, who will bring a red-tailed hawk and a barn owl to the event. The lecture will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. at the state park visitor center.

Single tickets to attend the lecture are $7 and will include the parking fee. Herbst is a Franklin County teacher and education director of Friends of Philpott Lake.

The raptor expert has lectured nationally on raptors, such as eagles, hawks, owls and ospreys.

Season tickets to the annual series of lectures on various topics are $18 or $32 for a pair.
The March lecture will be on the world of the hummingbird by Peggy Speigel Opengari.
The April lecture by Ron Coleman visits the world of Thomas Jefferson.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park is on State Park Road off SmithᅠMountain Lake Parkway in Huddleston. For more information, call 540 297-6066.
